Better Sound Quality at a Better Price: Picking the Right Earbuds with AMBA Passport.

May 24, 2022

Whether you’re listening to your favorite music while getting in your daily recommended steps, catching up on your favorite podcast while taking a hike, or enjoying hands-free access to talk on the phone with loved ones, wireless earbuds are a great solution. Their bluetooth connectivity can pair with your phone, smartwatch, smart TV, tablet, and laptop with excellent sound quality.

Here are the factors to help you decide which pair is right for you.

How to Find the Right Wireless Earbuds for You

To Mic or Not to Mic?

Most, but not all, wireless headphones have a microphone included. Some people prefer not to have one at all. They prefer a dedicated pair of headphones to make sure their music or audio book is uninterrupted for undisturbed “Me Time”.

If you want a pair of earbuds that enables you to talk on the phone, make sure you get a pair that has a microphone.

The Right Fit

Above all else, even sound quality, the most important factor to consider when buying earbuds is that they’re comfortable. Make sure the fit is snug so they will stay in your ears better and you’ll enjoy better external noise cancellation and a richer bass sound from your music.

Some companies include a variety of sizes of ear tips that you can swap out to get the fit that’s right for you.

Active Noise Cancellation

As previously mentioned, some earbuds provide active noise cancellation. These models tend to cost more, but the difference in sound quality can be worth it. Tiny microphones “hear” external ambient noise and then channel the sound to a processor that generates a sound wave with the opposite polarity to cancel it out. The result is more uninterrupted enjoyment of whatever you’re listening to.

Exercise Features

While Active Noise Cancellation blocks external sounds, some earbuds have “transparency mode”, which increases external sounds. This is an important safety feature if you’re exercising outdoors. If you plan on exercising with your new earbuds, be sure to buy a pair that are water and sweat resistant.

Personal Assistants

Some earbuds let you activate your smart device’s personal assistant (such as Siri, Alexa, or Google Assistant) with a tap on one of the earbuds or a “wake word”.

Battery Life

The last, but not the least, thing to consider is the number of hours your earbuds retain an active charge. You want a pair that offers at least 5 hours of continuous music streaming between charges (keep in mind: if you use the active noise cancellation feature on your earbuds, the charge time will be somewhat less). Many wireless earbuds come with a charging case with its own battery that can offer 15 to 20 hours of extra battery life.
