AUSTIN, Texas (June 22, 2002) EMPACT, the political arm of Texas’ largest state employee organization, Texas Public Employees Association (TPEA), today endorsed John Sharp for Lieutenant Governor in the November election.
Sharp most recently took office as Texas Comptroller of Public Accounts in 1991, where he launched the Texas Performance Review, an ongoing performance audit of state government. As a result of his efforts, the Comptroller’s Office won the first Texas Quality Award ever presented to a government agency. As comptroller, Sharp granted the last back-to-back pay raises state employees received, in 1992 and 1993.
“With eight years experience as State Comptroller, John Sharp has demonstrated his clear understanding of the issues important to state employees,” said Gary Anderson, executive director of TPEA. “As Lieutenant Governor, TPEA is confident that John Sharp will work to make state government more efficient by addressing the issue of high turnover in state agencies.”
Sharp was elected to the Texas House of Representatives in 1978, and also to the Texas Senate in 1982, where he served on the Senate Finance Committee and the Sunset Advisory Committee. In 1986, Sharp was elected to the Texas Railroad Commission where he helped reform the state’s trucking regulations and improve railroad safety.
“John Sharp’s proven record in government has shown that he is able to address the turnover needs of state employees,” said Jim Zukowski, chairman of EMPACT. “His experience in the Legislature is invaluable to working towards a solution for state employee turnover and benefits needs.”
Sharp is a native Texan and a graduate of Texas A&M University. He also received a Masters Degree in Public Administration from Southwest Texas State University in 1976.
Texas Public Employees Association is the state’s oldest and largest organization for state employees, representing the interests of all Texas state government employees and retirees since 1946.
