Texas Public Employees Association PAC Endorses Carole Keeton Rylander

AUSTIN, Texas (June 22, 2002) – EMPACT, the political arm of Texas’ largest state employee organization, Texas Public Employees Association (TPEA), today endorsed Carole Keeton Rylander for Comptroller of Public Accounts in the November election.
Comptroller Rylander is the first woman in Texas history elected as Comptroller, and has spent her term finding efficiencies and helping achieve a pay raise for state employees last legislative session. She served as the first female mayor of Austin and the only mayor elected for three successive terms. Rylander is a business woman; she also served on the Austin Community College Board of Trustees. Comptroller Rylander was also named the TPEA Administrator of the Year in 1999.
“The Texas Public Employee’s Association is proud to support Carole Keeton Rylander for another term as Comptroller of Public Accounts,” said Jim Zukowski, chairman of EMPACT. “Comptroller Rylander has demonstrated that protecting the taxpayer’s investment in state government by maintaining a quality state workforce is a priority.”
Comptroller Rylander gained experience serving two consecutive terms on the Texas Railroad Commission, where she led the fight for trucking deregulation, reorganizing and modernizing the Railroad Commission for the first time in its 104-year history.
“The comptroller’s office is a prime example of efficient, skilled state workers in action,” said Gary Anderson, executive director of TPEA. “Comptroller Rylander runs her office the way a business should be run – focusing on issues that lower cost and reduce turnover. She has demonstrated time and again that she knows just how valuable public service is.”
“The upcoming term will be most critical for the state workforce,” said Anderson. “We know that Comptroller Rylander will address the issues that matter most to state employees and help put policies in place that will retain well-trained employees and protect the taxpayer’s investment in government.”
Comptroller Rylander is a native Texan and a government honors graduate of the University of Texas at Austin.
Texas Public Employees Association is the state’s oldest and largest organization for state employees, representing the interests of all Texas state government employees and retirees since 1946.
