Scholarships

Each year TPEA offers scholarships to assist state employees in furthering their education. The $500 Liberty Mutual Scholarship and two $500 BlueCross BlueShield Scholarships are available to both TPEA members and relatives of TPEA members. The R. Jennings "Jay" Bohner TPEA Scholarship is available to TPEA members only. The application deadline for all 2008 scholarships has passed.

Liberty Mutual Scholarship

The 2008 Liberty Mutual scholarship is a financial award based on special skills, scholarship abilities, community service, and future employment needs. One $500 scholarship will be awarded at the TPEA annual meeting in June 2008. Members of TPEA, their spouses, and/or dependents are eligible for this award. Applicants do not have to be Liberty Mutual policy holders.

This application must be completed by the student. It, along with transcripts and a written statement, must be received at TPEA headquarters by FRIDAY, MAY 30, 2008.

Application Addenda/Miscellaneous:

In addition to this application form, you must provide:

  • A transcript of your grades for the last three reporting periods at the high school and/or college where you are enrolled.
  • A summary, of no more than 300 words, telling how you meet the judging criteria and why you wish to receive this scholarship. Be sure you address each criteria listed above.

TPEA membership requirements will be verified before scholarship funds are awarded. Unsigned or otherwise incomplete applications, or applications without the required addenda, will not be returned and will be rejected by the panel of judges or its designee. Students enrolled in correspondence courses do not qualify for this program.

Blue Cross Blue Shield Scholarship

The 2008 Blue Cross Blue Shield/Texas Public Employees Association scholarship is a financial award based on special skills, scholarship abilities, community service, and future employment needs. Two $500 scholarships will be awarded at the TPEA annual meeting in June 2008. Members of TPEA, their spouses, and/or dependents are eligible for this award.

This application must be completed by the student. It, along with transcripts and a written statement, must be received at TPEA headquarters by FRIDAY, MAY 30, 2008.

R. Jennings "Jay" Bohner TPEA Scholarship Program

To participate in the scholarship program, the state employee must meet all of the following requirements:

  • Be a Texas Public Employee Association member.
  • Be a state employee for at least two years.
  • Be enrolled in a senior or graduate level college or university program. Must be classified as a junior, senior, or graduate student.
  • Not be eligible for state agency reimbursement for educational expenses.
  • Provide an official degree plan and transcript(s) showing hours completed.

The scholarship will be given to a state employee who strives for educational excellence through senior or graduate level college academia. Grade-point average and financial need also will be considered. The $500 scholarship will be awarded at the TPEA annual meeting in June 2008.

Completed application forms should be accompanied with the applicant's college transcript(s), letter of acceptance from an accredited college or university, and a degree plan.
